Firms are now faced with important strategic choices concerning their management of GHG’s.  Not only are firms with a global presence affected, those in the US are seeking to identify and take advantage of opportunities for the creation and sale of tradable GHG emission allowances.  New and potentially profitable opportunities are emerging for firms proactive enough to find and benefit from them.  For such firms effective management of GHG emissions will mean thousands, perhaps million of dollars, not just in avoided costs, but in additional revenue to the corporate bottom line.

Effective GHG management makes sound business sense by identifying cost savings from increased energy efficiency.  Since most GHG emissions come from energy production, large energy users will find that measures taken to reduce energy use will not only allow creation and sale of GHG allowances, but may also yield significant cost savings.  BP America and Alcoa have reported substantial cost savings associated with energy efficiency improvements as a result of initiatives designed to reduce GHG emissions.

Mountain StreamOften companies find that GHG emission reduction strategies improve their company’s productivity in unexpected ways.  For example, a Massachusetts cutting blade manufacturer upgraded its lighting from old fluorescents to new high-pressure-sodium-vapor and metal halide fixtures.  Annual energy savings came to $48,000.00, however, the surprise came in productivity gains:  The new system makes it possible for workers to spot small particles that cause costly production defects, improving product quality and yielding the equivalent of $250,000.00 in increased sales.

WalMart, Dell, GE are all going GREEN and reducing GHG and purchasing carbon credits.  These companies are bolstering their brand name and consumer confidence in their products.

If these companies can see the benefits, you should be thinking of going GREEN as well.
